Pediatrics Q&A

What is pediatrics?

Pediatrics is the medical specialty focused on the physical, mental, and social health of children. Pediatric care includes a broad spectrum of health services, ranging from preventive care like immunizations to the diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions.

Our friendly and knowledgeable pediatric specialists at The R.O.C. Center know that children aren’t just tiny adults. Infants, toddlers, children, and adolescents all experience unique physical and emotional changes as they grow and develop. Routine pediatric care ensures your child is set up for optimal health in the future.

What is the difference between a pediatrician and a family doctor?

Pediatricians and family doctors both treat babies, children, and teens. The main difference is a pediatrician only treats children until their late teens or early adulthood, while a family doctor provides continued care for adults.

As a family medicine practice, we treat people of all ages, from newborn infants to their grandparents. In addition to maintaining continuity of care, family medicine offers the convenience of getting health care for the entire family under the same roof.

When should I bring my child to a pediatrician?

Your child needs to see their doctor at different frequencies depending on their stage of life. If you have a newborn, you should take them to the doctor at least six times in the first year. Between ages 1 and 3, they should come in every 3-6 months. After age 4, most children need wellness visits only once a year.

Our pediatrics providers also see children for sick visits, minor injuries like broken bones, and preventive health services like immunizations. For children and teens who participate in sports, we perform sports physicals.

What services are unique to pediatrics?

Infants, toddlers, and young children usually reach developmental milestones at certain ages. Our team has special training to ensure your child is developing typically. If not, your provider may refer you to a developmental pediatrics specialist for additional testing.
